OSHA 501 - Trainer Course for General Industry

Course Information
This trainer course is designed for personnel interested in teaching the OSHA 10- or 30-Hour General Industry Outreach courses. Special emphasis is placed on required topics in the OSHA Outreach Program. Various instructional approaches and the effective use of visual aids and handouts will also be covered. Course participants will work in groups or independently to practice their presentation of selected topics. (Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop to work on presentation materials.) A written examination is given at the conclusion of the course. Successful completion of the course and the final examination allows the participant to be recognized as an OSHA Authorized Outreach Trainer for General Industry.

This course is provided by the Mid-South OTI Education Center. Minimum Contact Hours: 26

General industry outreach trainers must take OSHA 503 every four years to maintain their status as an outreach trainer.

Learn to:
  • Locate OSHA safety and health standards, policies, and procedures
  • Describe the use of OSHA standards and regulations to supplement an ongoingsafety and health program
  • Identify common violations of OSHA standards, such as lockout/tagout, walking and working surfaces, hazardous materials, and welding
  • Conduct internal training on OSHA regulations and recordkeeping

Prerequisites:
OSHA #511 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry taken within the last 7 years and five (5) years of general industry safety experience. A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in occupational safety and health or industrial hygiene from an accredited college or university, a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation may be substituted for a total of two (2) years of experience. Authorized OSHA General Industry Outreach Training Program trainers are required to attend OSHA #503 Update for General Industry Outreach Trainers at least once every four (4) years to maintain their trainer status. You must complete the Prerequisite Verification Form prior to registering for this course.

  • 29 CFR 1910 General Industry Safety Standard provided by the Mid-South OTI Education Center.
  • Due to course content we highly recommend bringing a laptop.
